IBU dissemination visit to UPKM within ELEMEND project

As a part of dissemination activities within the project objectives, a visit to University of Pristina in Kosovska Mitrovica has been organized. Its aim was the exchange of the experiences between two institutions as well as the presentation of the laboratories and teaching practices.

As a part of dissemination activities within the project objectives, on 4th and 5th March 2021, International Burch University visited Mediterranean University, in Podgorica, Montenegro. The aim of the visit was the exchange of experiences between these two institutions.

Memorandum on scientific and technical cooperation – University of Tuzla

The company ArcelorMittal Zenica employs a large number of electrical engineers who have completed their studies at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, University of Tuzla. This fact was the reason for signing the Agreement on Scientific and Technical Cooperation between the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and the company ArcelorMittal Zenica. The agreement was signed on March 7, 2019. in the premises of Arcelor Mittal in Zenica. On behalf of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, the Agreement was signed by the Dean Prof. Dr. Nerdina Mehinović, and on behalf of ArcelorMittal General Manager of the company, Mr. Biju Nair.

Dean Mehinović pointed out that it is a pleasure to do anything that will help in the education and training of our students. “It is a great honor to see our former students here with us, because it is proof that ours are doing their job well. We want young people to stay here, because without young people there is no development of the state. Let our people and our minds stay here. ”

“This is important not only for employment, but also for learning and acquiring new knowledge of young people. We can use this agreement as a basis for scholarships as well as for gaining practical experience. ArcelorMittal is looking for experienced workers and engineers. With this agreement, we are preparing students for the future, and everything starts with student work “, added director Nair.

The agreement on scientific and technical cooperation covers the following areas:
– participation in innovating the technological knowledge of ArcelorMittal employees
– cooperation and support in the preparation of final graduate, master’s and doctoral theses
– development and improvement of production with the aim of optimizing the use of raw materials and energy
– professional internship, and laboratory exercises for students.

 
 

Memorandum on business-technical cooperation – University of Tuzla

On June 2nd, 2017, the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of the University of Tuzla and JKP “Saobraćaj i komunikacije-Tuzla” signed an agreement on scientific-research and business-technical cooperation.
 
This agreement formalizes the cooperation that has already been realized on previous projects such as the joint project of building an optical network in the city of Tuzla for the needs of the University of Tuzla and JKP “Saobraćaj i komunikacije-Tuzla” in 2013 and 2014. Also, this agreement is the basis for continued cooperation in order to implement concrete projects in the future.
 
Cooperation between these two institutions has created a platform through which students and teaching staff of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering will have the opportunity to carry out scientific research through the implementation of practical projects. On the other hand, JKP “Saobraćaj i komunikacije-Tuzla” and the City of Tuzla will get visible products and systems that are a product of domestic “smartness” and raise the level of quality of life in Tuzla.
 

Memorandum on business-technical cooperation – University of Tuzla

As part of the implementation of the strategic goal of public presentation of the competencies of the OIEiEK operator and raising public awareness of the benefits of using renewable energy sources, a Memorandum on business and technical cooperation between the OIEiEK operator and the Faculty of Electrical Engineering in Tuzla was signed on November 2, 2017.
 
The memorandum defines cooperation in the form of educational visits of students to hydropower plants and photovoltaic power plants, providing access to measurement and statistical – analytical data available to the OIEiEK operator, which are related to electricity production from renewable energy plants, joint engagement of OIEiEK operator employees and the Faculty of Electrical Engineering Tuzla through the organization of lectures, panel discussions, round tables and other professional events, and in the form of lectures on the establishment of the OIEiEK Operator, its functioning, and relevant positive European and domestic legal regulations.
 
The signatories of the Memorandum agreed that the signing of the Memorandum is of great importance for both institutions, and that the signing is only the first step in the future, certainly, successful implementation of the goals defined by the Memorandum on business and technical cooperation.
 

UPKM Bilateral dissemination visit to Singidunum University within ELEMEND project

As a part of dissemination activities within the project objectives, a two-day bilateral meeting has been organized at Singidunum University, Belgrade, Serbia. The aim of the meeting was the exchange of the experiences between two institutions as well as the mutual introduction with the new study programmes, laboratories and teaching practices. UPKM representatives visited SU and had opportunity to be introduced with best practices. Also, the aim of the meeting was to establish future cooperation between those two universities through signing Memorandum of Understanding which is agreed during this visit with the management team of the Singidunum University.
 

PROMOTION OF ELEMEND PROJECT – UNIVERSITY OF MITROVICA – FACULTY OF TECHNICAL SCIENCES UPKM-FTS

On April 27, 2021 at the Faculty of Technical Sciences of the University in Pristina in Kosovska Mitrovica, the promotional event has taken place in order to promote the ongoing Erasmus+ projects implemented at the Faculty. The Dean of FTS, Prof. Dr. Nebojša Arsić, vice deans, professors and students have participated in the event.  Also, all directors of the high schools from North Kosovo* region were present, together with high school graduates and other interested citizens. During this event there was promoted Erasmus + project ELEMEND – Electrical Energy Markets and Engineering Education, project no. 585681-EEP-1-2017-EL-EPPKA2-CBHE-JP. Also, there were presented modernized undergraduate/master study program in the field of the Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences as well as modern laboratory equipped by state-of-art equipment and other activities realized within ELEMEND project.
 

ELEMEND project at INFOTEH – Jahorina 2021 

Within the 20th International Symposium INFOTEH-Jahorina 2021, a two-day ELEMEND workshop was organized by the University of East Sarajevo. 
The aim of the workshop was the presentation of the results of the project including the new study programs and the purchased laboratory equipment for ELEMEND laboratories.
 

ELEMEND project presented in ‘Elektrodistribucija’ a.d Pale

On Monday, 28.12.2020. the team from the University of East Sarajevo had a chance to demonstrate the new master program to the staff of the branch office of the ‘Elektrodistribucija’ Pale.
 

ELEMEND at Inter-project coaching online meeting – TRAFSAF

On 30.09.2020., an Inter‐project coaching online meeting within the ERASMUS+ project TRAFSAF was organized with the purpose of exchange of experiences in different ERASMUS + projects.

ELEMEND project at the INTSIKT 2020 Symposium – Tuzla

On Tuesday, 17.11.2020, at INTSIKT 2020 Symposium Aphrodite Ktena, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, and Tatjana Konjić, University of Tuzla will have a chance to talk about ‘Aligning WBC BSc and MSc curriculum with the smart grid paradigm’ in the scope of the ELEMEND project. 

INTSIKT 2020 is an annual international symposium where industry, academia, and government institutions exchange knowledge and experiences within the ICT domain. The symposium is traditionally organized by the Faculty of the Electrical Engineering University of Tuzla, Faculty of Electrical Engineering, University of Ljubljana, and BIT Center Tuzla.

Co-financing the project activities – UES

As a support of the ELEMEND project, as part of co-financing the project activities, the University of East Sarajevo provided and procured five sets of equipment, consisting of programmable DC power supplies and Siglent functional generators, true RMS multimeters, and soldering sets from Weller. 
With the already provided equipment, financed by the EU through the ELEMEND project, the conditions for laboratory education and research and development on power electronics converters and their integration with renewable energy sources have been fully achieved.

ELEMEND project in the Reforms Inside – Publication of Higher Education Reform Experts (HERE) in Montenegro 

The idea for HERE publication was conceived by the National Erasmus+ Office and HERE team, in order to offer an insight into the various topics related to the improvement and continuing reform of the Montenegrin higher education system, as well as the results of a number of local activities undertaken by Montenegrin HERE team and other representatives of the academic community. 
This publication sheds light on some important topics and issues in the field of higher education, the reflections of HERE team on main improvements and goals achieved so far. In addition to the advantages, this publication also points out the disadvantages of Montenegrin higher education system, i.e. the specific fields within it where further efforts are needed. 
The publication includes some reflections of professors from Montenegrin HEIs, prominent representatives of the academic community, who are currently implementing some of the capacity building projects in the field of higher education, such as the ELEMEND, that are of great importance for improvement and modernization of various study programmes at Montenegrin universities as well as for harmonization of Montenegrin higher education system with the European standards in this field.
 

 

„Magnetism“ with prof. dr. Aphrodite Ktena at the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering – IBU

On Tuesday, June 2nd, students at the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering had a chance to participate in a guest lecture on Magnetism by an expert in this field, prof. dr. Aphrodite Ktena. 

Professor Ktena is a professor at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA), Greece. She obtained her MSc and PhD degree in electrical engineering at Carnegie Mellon University, USA. The professor has been engaged as ERASMUS & ECTS coordinator for TEI of Chalkida, then TEI of Sterea Ellada, and now in NKUA. Beside mentioned engagements professor has a research interest in R&D in gamification for education, magnetic non-destructive testing techniques, smart metering, and sensors; undergraduate course development for low and medium voltage distribution, measurement technology; undergraduate laboratory development; and various project developments. 

In the scope of ELEMEND project, where she has been the project coordinator, this is the second lesson that has been organized for EEE students this semester. Professor Ktena gave a presentation on magnetism, magnetic phenomena, and its application in everyday life emphasizing the subjects that students have listened to and learned in the scope of Fundamentals of Electrical Engineering and Electromagnetic Field Theory.

Equipment for Virtual Laboratory for Wind Turbine Emulation supported by ELEMEND project – University of Tuzla 

At the end of 2019 and beginning of 2020, Lab equipment, provided by the ELEMEND project, was delivered to the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, University of Tuzla. Delivered Lab equipment is intended for development of ELEMEND Virtual Laboratory for Wind Turbine Emulation and processes involved in remotely monitoring and control of Wind Turbine Emulator. 

Students will be able remotely monitor and control experiments using any HTTP-capable web client, including a standard web browser, or applet embedded in Moodle LMS, to exchange data using a URL and standard HTTP methods. Except this by using IP webcam student will have visual insight into laboratory setup. 

A web client will exchange data with a remote LabVIEW stand-alone application, running on real time controller cRIO, over a network through LabVIEW Web services. A web client, such as a browser, exchanges data with a LabVIEW Web service by sending an HTTP request to a specific URL. The Web service returns data to the web client in a particular format that you configure, such as XML.

Strengthening the cooperation with EU partners – “Energy Saving Technologies” by Prof. Dr. Nadezhda Kunicina at the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering at IBU

 

On Thursday, May 21, Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering organized an online guest lecture ‘Energy Saving Technologies’ by Prof. Dr. Nadezhda Kunicina. Profesor Kunicina is a professor and a member of the technological innovation board at Riga Technical University (RTU). Her fields of scientific interests are electrical engineering, embedded systems, sustainable transport systems, effective lighting, equipment design, industrial as well as micro- and nano-electronics, and energy saving in the automotive sector. 

Professor Kunicina is a scientific project manager of the RTU team and the author of Tempus Energy, Arrowhead, and 11 educational projects of European Social fund, involved in research cooperation in the EU. As the expert, Prof. Dr. Kunicina is part of the team for the evaluation of scientific project applications in Electrical Engineering and FP7 ENERGY and PEOPLE calls. Moreover, she is an author of more than 120 scientific publications, scientific monographs, and textbooks. 

Partnership with RTU has begun three years ago through our cooperation on the ELEMEND project. Therefore, the professor started the meeting with a presentation of their university and opportunities they are offering to their students which now extends to our students as well. Students had an opportunity to learn about Energy Saving Technologies and their practical implementation and usage in industry. Professor Kunicina has used real examples from Latvia and RTU projects to demonstrate the possibilities to which the application of the mentioned technologies may extend.

ELEMEND Laboratory at Mediterranean University

 

The ELEMEND Laboratory is part of Faculty of Information Technologies at Mediterranean University, established through the ELEMEND Erasmus+ project. 

ELEMEND laboratory hosts 20 PCs, with 15 IoT development kits, for laboratory. IoT development kit consists of single board computers and microcontrollers (Arduino and Raspberry Pi), wireless communication modules (GPS, GPRS, Xbee, LoRa, WiFi), memory (Micro USB and memory card), set of sensors and actuators (temperature, IR, rain, sound, flame, laser, ultrasonic, photosensitive, soil moisture, obstacle avoidance, vibration, tilt sensor, RFID module, step motor, flowmeter, …), set of resistors, LED lights, cables, power supplies, etc. 

The laboratory equipment supports course in IoT, as well for research in design projects and master theses. In ELEMEND laboratory, students will be able to get familiar with sophisticated technologies in IoT and get involved in several projects in home automation, remote devices control, etc.

Within the open-door day on May 10, 2019, Faculty of Electrical Engineering, University of Tuzla presented the ELEMEND project to the students and numerous visitors. 

ELEMEND as a “Best Practice” for ERASMUS+ CBHE projects

 

ELEMEND was presented as a “Best Practice” for ERASMUS+ Capacity Building for Higher Education programmes at the Western Balkans (WB) Cluster Meeting organized by the NEO of Albania in Durres, Albania, on October 22nd-23rd.

ELEMEND Laboratory at University of Pristina in Kosovska Mitrovica

 

Through the ELEMEND project, the University of Pristina in Kosovska Mitrovica established the laboratory for the Windpower training system and purchased some equipment for the automation and robotics.

Through the ELEMEND project, the University of East Sarajevo established the laboratory for the PV system.

ELEMEND Laboratory at International Burch University

 

The ELEMEND Laboratory is part of the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering at the International Burch University and is established through the ELEMEND Erasmus+ project. 

ELEMEND laboratory hosts the latest trends in the field of Smart Grids including the newest equipment for photovoltaic (PV) panel, wind turbine, and storage. It supports a variety of courses in the field of Power systems and Control theory including Power system analysis, Distribution systems, Renewable electrical energy systems, Power electronics, etc. Besides teaching and educational purpose, ELEMEND laboratory is used for research as well as Senior design projects, Master and PhD theses. 

In ELEMEND laboratory, students are able to get familiar with sophisticated hardware and software such as PV panel, wind turbine, storage, power electronics, programmable power supply, which can simulate PV panel, LabVIEW from National Instruments, Humusoft, Beckhoff automation technology, etc.

International Burch Unviversity’s two-day educational trip

 

In April 2019, professors and students from the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering of International Burch University, visited SHPP Kraljuščica, large hydro power plant HE Jablanica, photovoltaic power station Hodovo near Stolac and a wind farm in Mesihovina-Tomislavgrad. 

 

The two-day trip turned out to be a beautiful experience for both students and professors. This allowed students to see and understand the working principles in real life, since master students are attending many courses related to renewable energy and distributed generation. 

 

The goal of this educational trip was to provide students with practical and theoretical experience of power generation units in Bosnia and Herzegovina. These technologies are nowadays attractive around the world as they will become integral and main part in the concept of Smart Grid.

ELEMEND at 14th International book and education fair – Podgorica

 

The 14th edition of the PODGORICA’S BOOK AND EDUCATION FAIR took place from April 4th to 11th, 2019. 

Podgorica Book Fair was established in 2006, and from last year Ministry of Education is co-organizer of the Fair including presentation of educational institutions. This year, all Montenegrin universities took participation in the Fair. Mediterranean University participated in this fair, representing its study programs, and also ELEMEND project to the students and other visitors. University also promoted new plan for Master studies, including ELEMEND courses which are in the process of accreditation.

New Automation Technology with Beckhoff PLC Control Workshop held at IBU

 

IEEE B&H Young professionals together with B&H Futures Foundation and International Burch University have organized the two-day workshop – New Automation Technology with Beckhoff PLC Control, on April 6th and 7th, 2019. The workshop brought together the students from all over the country. 

 

Students had a chance to gain new experiences in using state-of-the-art automation technologies, available through the products of one of the most popular automotive technology manufacturers in Europe – Beckhoff from Germany. The Beckhoff automation technology equipment has been bought at the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, IBU, in the scope of the ELEMEND project.

 

Lectures were given by Mr. Marjan Ravšel from Beckhoff, Slovenia, and Mr. Suad Ibrahimkadić from SICON company, BiH. 

The workshop was concluded with the students’ project presentations.

INTERNATIONAL BURCH UNIVERSITY visited by the RT-RK Company Representatives

 

Sanja Zekonjić, general manager at the RT-RK Institute in Banja Luka, presented the company in a full Motif room where students from the Department of Electrical Engineering (EEE) and Information Technology (IT) had the opportunity to get acquainted with a company which has a high number of engineers employed; over 1000 all in Novi Sad, Osijek and Banja Luka. The RT-RK company develops software for the world’s largest companies. From many projects, some of which they emphasized is their participation in developing software for the independent parking of new Audi models that will soon be available on the market as well as the development of communication software for the new generation Ariane 6 missile whose test flight is scheduled for 2020.

Power electronics equipment at IBU

 

In the scope of the ELEMEND project, Power electronics equipment from Taraz technologies has been bought at the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, IBU. 

 

The SPM Series of Power Modules from Taraz technologies comes in four common circuits such as Half Bridge, Full Bridge, 3 Phase and MMC Cells. They are directly pluggable with gate driver modules and can be used for fast prototyping of popular power converter circuits such as Single & Multi-Phase Inverters, Buck/Boost Converters, Single & Multi-Phase Active Rectifiers and Modular Multi-Level Converters etc. It can cover a wide range of applications such as Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs), BLDC Motor Drives, PV inverters and converters in research and educational environments. 

 

The user can connect Input and output terminals using pluggable terminal blocks or banana connectors, providing ease of use in labs. Test points are also available for pain-free testing.

NATIONAL INSTRUMENTS EQUIPMENT AND PRESENTATION AT INTERNATIONAL BURCH UNIVERSITY

 

In the scope of the ELEMEND project, National Instruments equipment has been bought at the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, IBU. 

 

NI has developed high-performance automated test and automated measurement systems to help solve engineering challenges now and into the future. Their software-defined platform uses modular hardware and an expansive ecosystem that turn powerful possibilities into real solutions. 

 

On the 21st of February, Mr. Antonios Vandoulakis together with his colleague Mr. Bojan Jokanovic held the presentation on the usage of LabVIEW and NI equipment.

BECKHOFF AUTOMATION TECHNOLOGY EQUIPMENT AT INTERNATIONAL BURCH UNIVERSITY

 

In the scope of the ELEMEND project, Beckhoff automation technology equipment has been bought at the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, IBU. 

 

Beckhoff implements open automation systems based on PC Control technology. The product range covers Industrial PCs, I/O and Fieldbus Components, Drive Technology and automation software. Products that can be used as separate components or integrated into a complete and seamless control system are available for all industries. The Beckhoff “New Automation Technology” philosophy represents universal and open control and automation solutions that are used worldwide in a wide variety of different applications, ranging from CNC-controlled machine tools to intelligent building automation. 

 

This technology can be accessed for research, teaching purposes and students’ projects and theses.

ENERGY MONITORING SYSTEM INSTALLED AT INTERNATIONAL BURCH UNIVERSITY

Cluster Meeting of CBHE projects focusing on the Curriculum Development in Montenegro

 

On November 29th 2018, the Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA) together with National Erasmus+ Office organized the cluster meeting focusing on the Curriculum Development projects (CBHE and Tempus) in Podgorica, Montenegro. 

 

Curriculum Development (CD) projects constitute the largest number of selected projects in which Montenegrin higher education institutions participated/participate as partners or coordinators. 

 

The meeting was aimed at finding out advantages and disadvantages of CD projects implementation, discussing and sharing good practices and common challenges faced during the implementation phase of 14 selected Tempus/CBHE projects. Thus, the objectives of the meeting were to assess the impact and sustainability of Curriculum Reform projects and identify key challenges in the implementation and accreditation of such projects.

Cluster Meeting of Tempus/CBHE projects focusing on the University-Enterprises Cooperation in BiH

 

On November 7th 2018, the National Erasmus+ Office in Bosnia and Herzegovina (NEO) organized a cluster meeting of Tempus/CBHE projects focusing on the university-enterprises cooperation in BiH involving partners from Bosnia and Herzegovina.

 

Objective of the meeting was to assess the impact of the 12 selected Tempus/CBHE projects focusing on the university-enterprises cooperation in Bosnia and Herzegovina on higher education sector, public and private sector and the society at large, as well as to share experiences and provide some recommendations for the future.

On the October 24th to 25th, 2018 Sarajevo was the main meeting point for energy and water experts, stakeholders and business leaders in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Balkan region. 

 

Over 80 participants promoted advanced technologies, equipment, services, and financing in the field of: Energy Efficiency, Renewable Energy, Water Supply and Waste Water Infrastructure, Solid Waste Management and different aspects for improvement of environmental and economic standards.

 

The conference was based on current market status and it announced upcoming trends, such as: Crowdfunding, E-mobility, and Energy Management System in BiH.

 

RENEXPO® BIH is an opportunity to connect BiH market leaders with international industry, to gain valuable insight information on the energy and water sector in BiH.

At the beginning of May, students and professors of the International Burch University in Sarajevo organized and hosted the first International Burch Week, where they were able to meet prominent professors from the European Union, the region and other parts of the world. 

In addition, on May 17th, International Burch University hosted representatives of University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria, ÖSD (Österreichisches Sprachdiplom Deutsch), and Dublin Institute of Technology. 

On both events, ELEMEND project was presented by the representatives of Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering and potential future cooperation was discussed.

 

PRESENTATION of the ELEMEND at UNIVERSITY of TUZLA

 

Joint presentation of two Erasmus + Projects: BENEFIT (585716-EPP-1-2017-1-AT-EPPKA2-CBHE-JP) and ELEMEND (585681-EEP-1-2017-EL-EPPKA2-CBHE-JP) were held on May 17, 2018 at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, University of Tuzla.

Within the open-door day, University of Tuzla have presented the ELEMEND project to the students and numerous visitors.

Partners of this great project from B&H are universities from Eastern Sarajevo and Tuzla, while a total of nine universities from the Balkans will participate. Universities in the EU are of course part of the project as well.
